12. Bloomsbury

The Literary, Medical and Academic Quarter

Located between the City and the West End, Bloomsbury is often overlooked on traditional London tours, yet its garden squares have hosted the most creative, intellectual and pioneering people and sites of London.

Here, London’s aspiring middle classes created an area that led the world in literary, medical and academic achievement. Charles Dickens lived in Doughty Street and wrote the Pickwick Papers, Great Expectations and Oliver Twist and the Bloomsbury Group of writers, artists and academics pushed the boundaries of traditional thinking in the twentieth century. Millicent Fawcett, Mahatma Gandhi and Charles Darwin also lived, worked or studied here.

We will see renowned sites such as the British Museum, the University of London and the Foundling and Great Ormond Street Hospitals, as well as London’s traditional and beautiful garden squares. This tour will also take in sites where Virginia Wolf and her academic colleagues lived and held their famous Thursday night soirees.
